DEL MONTE GROVE–LAGUNA GRANDE, Monterey — October 29, 2026. The public agency overseeing Laguna Grande Regional Park scheduled an October 12 discussion of a $1,621,418 Recreational Trails Program grant for the park’s trail project. The Laguna Grande Regional Joint Powers Agency, which involves Monterey, Seaside and the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District, also planned to discuss its priorities for trails and vegetation maintenance during fiscal year 2026–27.
Why the trail grant matters locally
Laguna Grande Park straddles Monterey and Seaside. Its paths link residential neighborhoods, recreation areas and freshwater habitat, making accessible, well-maintained trails important to residents on both sides of the city line. The October agenda identified an update on the $1,621,418 trail grant. That is a defined funding subject, but the available agenda does not establish how much has been spent, a completed construction contract or an opening date for any improved trail segment.
What else was before the October 12 board?
The meeting agenda included a review of Phase One priorities under the park’s Trail and Vegetation Maintenance Strategy, an update on two grant applications made by the City of Monterey, and an item concerning 1,200 state-funded California Conservation Corps crew hours for the separate understory-thinning initiative. These are related aspects of park management, but trail grant dollars and conservation crew hours are not interchangeable budgets.
The packet also called on the board to set fiscal-year priorities for vegetation and trail work. Because certified minutes and final votes were not available in the reviewed public summaries, California58 is not describing a scheduled discussion as a new approval.
What residents should ask for
Del Monte Grove and Laguna Grande neighbors may want to know which walking surfaces will be repaired first, whether routes will remain accessible during any construction, how vegetation work could affect nearby paths, and whether planned projects will include accessible entrances from Monterey-side neighborhoods. Those details require the JPA’s implementation schedule and plans rather than assumptions based on a grant amount.
This report is not a duplicate of California58’s separate neighborhood stories about a proposed exercise area for seniors, the Casanova Avenue streetlight, or the 12.8-acre understory-thinning project. Those concern different work and funding decisions.
