MONTEREY, Calif. — October 29, 2026. A walking-and-cycling connection at English Avenue and Del Monte Avenue is Del Monte Grove–Laguna Grande’s proposed local improvement for Monterey’s 2026–27 funding review. Project DMG-01 requests intersection modifications and improved access to the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, with a preliminary estimate of $300,000.
A connection between neighborhood streets and the coast
For people on foot, bicycles or mobility devices, the interface between a local street and the major coastal trail matters as much as the trail itself. The submitted nomination identifies a ramp and intersection-access problem at English and Del Monte avenues. It proposes improvements to the road crossing and the trail connection, rather than a completely new coastal trail or a proposal to widen all of Del Monte Avenue.
What city reviewers said
The October project memo describes city staff as supportive of DMG-01 and says it is consistent with the Move Monterey transportation plan. That is a favorable preliminary staff assessment, not final project approval or a promise of a particular ramp design. Traffic controls, accessibility details, utilities and construction feasibility would still require further work.
What happens next for this neighborhood?
The neighborhood proposal remained in the committee’s October 28 materials ahead of a November 18 ranking. Residents can use project code DMG-01 when following city agendas or commenting. This story covers one local junction, rather than unrelated waterfront maintenance elsewhere in Monterey.
Official record: City of Monterey, NCIP Committee October 28, 2026 second-review agenda packet, project DMG-01 (PDF). The city lists November 18, 2026 NCIP project ranking as an upcoming committee meeting. Cost figures are preliminary estimates, not awarded funding.
